Carpet Underlay

Carpet underlay goes hand-in-hand with enhancing the product lifetime of your carpet.

There are many other benefits to having a good quality carpet underlay, such as;

  • Increasing the comfort of your carpet
  • Taking out unevenness from the subfloor
  • Enhancing the sound insulation
  • Enhancing the noise insulation
  • Helping the carpet pile bounce back
  • Reducing wear on the carpet pile

There are many good brands of carpet underlay, and it is just as important in getting the right carpet underlay for your needs.

Carpet underlay comes in many different forms and thicknesses, in the traditional felt underlay or rubber underlay for example, or the newer PU underlay made from recycled foam, each have their own advantages.

Choosing the right underlay for your carpet can be decided by the amount of traffic in the carpet area, the type of installation being used (stick down or gripper), if there is underfloor heating, or if a particular thickness needs to be achieved.

For areas with underfloor heating it is important to know what the recommended amount of Tog is required, knowing this will help you choose the right underlay that will enable heat to come through and keep the room warm.

For commercial areas, it may be more appropriate to use an underlay with 'System 10' application, where the the underlay is stuck to the floor, and the carpet then stuck to the underlay, also known as a 'double-stick' installation, with a Durafit carpet underlay for example.

For true luxury and underfoot comfort, a deep and soft pile of at least 9mm or upwards is recommended. Our fabulous Diamond 10mm Luxury Underlay range offers this at incredible value for money. There are other big brands out there like the Cloud 9 and Trediare brands of carpet underlay, which offer the famous Cloud 9 Cumulus underlay and the Dreamwalk underlay by Tredaire.

Be sure to have quality grippers installed that are also appropriate for your subfloor, whether it is wood or concrete for example, and whether you need long pin or regular due to the thickness of your carpet - ensuring the underlay, gripper and carpet are all installed will help ensure more use from your carpet.
