Carpet underlay

With there being many different types of carpet underlays in the market, it can often get confusing and daunting as to which one to choose. At Carets And More we stock only the finest quality of underlays, that are fit for purpose and excellent value for money.

It's no myth, underlays greatly helps underfoot comfort, prolongs the serviceable lifetime of your carpet, helps reduce noise as well as helping to insulate your rooms. That's why we know that a good underlay is very important in getting the most out of your carpet.

In order to determine which carpet is most suitable for your carpet, a few points have to be considered before making your purchase..

  1. Where is the carpet going? A bedroom carpet for example will require a less heavy duty underlay than an underlay going under your carpets for your hall, stairs and landings for example. Carpet on communal areas such as stairs receive a much heavier type of wear than that of a carpet in a bedroom.
  2. How many people are living in the house/flat? It is important to bear in mind what kind of traffic or footfall your carpet will receive, a house that has a couple living in it will require a less heavy underlay than a house with a family of 5 living in it for example.
  3. What do you want the underlay for? If you have under floor heating for example, you primarily need to look at the 'TOG' rating of the underlay and that it is suitable for installation where you have under floor heating. A lower TOG value will allow more heat to come through, giving you increased warmth. If you are after a luscious and luxurious underfoot comfort then you will look for a quality thick carpet underlay, that is 10mm/11mm or even 12mm thick. Density is also a factor, depending on how spongy or firm you want your carpet to feel with the underlay underneath.

These are some main factors to keep in mind when looking for a carpet underlay that is suitable for your needs. At Carpets And More we always recommend a good quality carpet underlay - and to make sure to install a fresh new underlay with every new carpet that requires an underlay (Hessian/jute/action/woven backed carpets), in order to get the most out of your carpet.
